This genus has about 80 species, found all over Australia and extending to Malaysia & New Zealand. The common name is derived from the practice of early settlers to soak the leaves in boiling water to make a tea substitute. The are very desirable garden plants being hardy and bearing large open petalled flowers. Many make useful screen plants and some may be used for cut flowers. Australian hybrid Leptospermums are vigorous and disease resistant.
